An exhibition of Andrii Dostlev, a finalist of Kazimir Malevich Award 2020, will open on March 24 at the Kyiv-Mohyla Business School. The artist received a special award from kmbs “For a breakthrough concept” with the right to organize his own exhibition within the School.

“For this exhibition, I selected watercolor paintings from the series OST: die Geste, die Landschaft, die Mitteilung — a broader project on the border of photographic practices, which I am currently working on,” says the artist.

The project is based on a collection of personal photographs and cards that circulated among Ostarbeiters, forced laborers from Eastern Europe in Nazi Germany, and their families. The displayed watercolors show the backs of these photographs with memorable inscriptions and short messages. “On one hand, I am interested in this very form of preserving the memory of traumatic events, on the other, the use of photography (medium and physical objects — printed prints) as small gestures of mutual support for this community of people in captivity.”

The exhibition will last until May 30.

Andrii Dostlev — artist, curator and researcher of photography. Born in 1984 in Brianka, Ukraine; lives and works in Poznan, Poland. Works with themes of memory, collective trauma, identity and the possibilities of photography as a medium. Recent exhibitions include I still feel sorry when I throw away food — Grandma used to tell me stories about the Holodomor at the University of Viadrina (Frankfurt-on-Oder, Germany), Fairy Castles of Donetsk at 20square7 gallery (Berlin, Germany) and Licking War Wounds at the Centrala gallery (Poznan, Poland). He has published several photo books with his own projects. In 2019 he received (together with Lia Dostleva) the third prize at the Second National Bienniale of Young Contemporary Art. Guest researcher at the IWM Institute (Vienna, Austria, 2019).

The Kazimir Malevich Prize was established in 2008 on the initiative of Jerzy Onuch, director of the Polish Institute in Kyiv, and Wojciech Krukowski, director of the Center for Contemporary Art Ujazdowsky Castle, on the occasion of Kazimir Malevich’s 130th birth anniversary. The award is a testament to the memory and recognition of the artist of Polish origin, who was born in Kyiv. The Malevich Prize is awarded every two years to outstanding Ukrainian contemporary artists. In 2018, the Ukrainian Institute and the Adam Mickiewicz Institute joined the organization of the Award.
